Maritime Paper Products Limited (MPPL) and Norampac, a division of Cascades Canada ULC, announced the formation of a new joint venture for corrugated packaging operations in Atlantic Canada. MPPL will own 60 percent of the joint venture, with the remainder being owned by Norampac. The new entity will operate as Maritime Paper Products Limited Partnership. Under the terms of the agreement, MPPL will oversee management of the joint venture while Norampac will be a key supplier of containerboard.
“This brings together the collective strength of our two operations, ensuring the long-term supply of competitively priced, quality corrugated packaging for the Atlantic region,” says Gary Johnson, president of MPPL. The proposed joint venture is subject to final approval from the Competition Bureau of Canada.
As noted by Robert Patzelt, senior vice president, corporate development, SIL, “The new joint venture provides growth opportunities for our partners, customers, and employees and will bring long-term sustainable employment and continued investment to the region.”
Sun Automation Group Opens New Service Center in Singapore
Sun Automation Group opened a new Service Center in Singapore in January. The Center will improve Sun’s ability to service customers in the region. This addition is part of Sun Automation Group’s strategic plan to grow its business by establishing itself as a hub for Asian operations, excluding China. The technical focus is on rebuilds and repairs including transmissions, light assembly, and field support throughout the region. In order to provide quick turn-around, this facility will have an inventory of parts in stock.
Warll Appointed President and CEO of Dicar; Spencer Promoted to VP of Sales and Marketing
The board of directors of Dicar, Inc., announced the appointment of Steven K. Warll as the company’s new president and chief executive officer. Warll began with Dicar in 1990 and has risen through the ranks with positions in manufacturing, as well as domestic and international sales and marketing, and for the past three years served as vice president of sales and marketing. Warll is also a former AICC suppliers chairman.
Concurrently, Dicar has promoted its national sales manager since 2012, Shawn Spencer, to fill the position of vice president of sales and marketing. Spencer joined Dicar in 2010 as an area sales manager after a 20-year career with Packaging Corporation of America.
OM Partners Receives FEFCO Silver Award for “Best Innovation”
OM Partners received a Silver Award in the “Best Innovation” category by FEFCO (European Federation of Corrugated Board Manufacturers) during the closing event of FEFCO’s Technical Seminar in Copenhagen last October. This seminar is Europe’s premier platform for production and technology within the corrugated industry.
OM Partners was one of 48 other major suppliers to the corrugated industry invited to give an overview of the latest technological innovations. Following a vote from the FEFCO Production Committee, OM Partners received the Silver Award for its presentation on Cost-Optimal Transport Planning, Integrated with Production Scheduling. The Committee said, “The presentation convinced the jury that this innovation can bring real added value and improve the perception of competency of our industry by the customers. With this new development, OM Partners closed the gap and now offers a complete solution for supply chain planning and execution in a corrugated board factory.”

CTR Electric Compression Unitizer Gets Rave Reviews
EAM-Mosca Corporation’s new CTR Series of unitizers has caught the attention of the corrugated industry since its introduction at SuperCorrExpo last fall. AICC Region 6 Announces Scholarship Winners
Nelva Walz, AICC Region 6 director and vice president of business development of Elegant Packaging, announced that AICC Region 6 awarded its first set of two $1,000 scholarships.
Students Lindsey Bogardus, of Elmhurst College, and Matthew Madrigal, of Millikin University, were the winners. “The plan is to award two scholarships a semester (four per year) with a value of $1,000 each. The next scholarship will be awarded at AICC’s Spring Meeting on Tuesday, May 2014. The deadline for the May applications will be Saturday, March 1, 2014,” said Scott Jones, chairman of AICC Region 6 Scholarship Committee.

Metsä Board’s “Never-Ending Box” Wins Gold in Hong Kong Print Awards
A brochure in the form of a never-ending box, designed by Metsä Board Packaging Services, has won a Gold Award in the Hong Kong Print Awards 2013. Metsä Board took the age-old greeting card design but substituted interlocking boxes for flat card stock, and added messages and graphics to promote its services. Printers of the box, Hong Kong-based Safe Power, received the award in the “Promotional Printing–Other” category at a ceremony held on December 9, 2013.
Alliance Machine Systems International Names Danny Lopez New Territory Manager
Alliance Machine Systems International, LLC, announced that Danny Lopez is the new territory manager for the Western United States and Western Canada branches effective January 1, 2014. Lopez has been with Alliance more than seven years serving in application engineering and product management roles.
